If you say Suceava, you say the historical and cultural hub of Bucovina and you refer back to most of the oldest Romanian traditions and religious sites. The city was our last destination from our one-month trip across Romania during a global crisis. We were tired, but we knew this area was going to serve us the best experience of nature one can have. And this is how our trip to Suceava started. To be frank from the very beginning: this city is for nature lovers and culture seekers. Its nature is well known across Romanians and probably one of the most beautiful in Romania. But this is more about the Bukovina region. It is also a well-known religious center, with the Painted Monasteries as a UNESCO World Heritage site. But let’s get back to the city. Suceava is the heart and capital city of what is Romanian Bukovina and it’s a good base for your travel itinerary in the northern-east part of Romania. Between 1774 and 1918, Suceava was a city in the Austrian Empire (later Austro-Hungary), forming part of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomia and the Duchy of Bukovina. Due to the ethnic and religious diversity preceding World War II (in the city were living Romanians, Germans, Jews, Armenians, Poles, Ruthenians, and Czechs ), Rudolf Gassauer called Suceava “an Austria in miniature�. The Princely Fortress of Suceava built at the end of the 14th century near the Suceava medieval city was the residence of Moldavia’s rulers for almost 200 years, and today is one of the main touristic objectives you should not miss when visiting Bukovina. Consolidated and restored between 2011-2015, the Princely Fortress of Suceava is host to a permanent exhibition of medieval weapons and heraldic symbols of Moldavian rulers. A modern multimedia system is in place at Suceava’s Fortress today. Holograms and video projections reflecting medieval historical themes make a visit not only enjoyable but also highly informative. Just nearby the Fortress, the Bucovina Village Museum is another must-see! This perfect replica of an old Bucovinean village displays all representative buildings of a Romanian village from Bukovina, namely a church, the priest house, the teacher’s house, and numerous farmers' houses. The houses are different in looks depending on the specific region they represent. Inside some of these houses, multimedia technology helps the visitor experience authentic local customs related to the main events in rural people’s lives: birth, wedding, and death. So just get inside the nursery or take part in a traditional wedding or a funeral. As for its modern side, the city is home to a university founded in 1990, several museums, and an airport.
